Sophia Sheppard is a young artist based in Glasgow working mainly in film and photography. A recent graduate of Glasgow School of Art, her current work explores themes around community, belonging, cultural heritage and craft. Her interest in the St Ayles Skiff was sparked initially by the sense of genuine collaborative community endeavour and engagement that she observed when documenting the build and launch of Findhorn’s skiff ‘Joppa’.
With The Rising Tide is a short documentary film exploring themes around community, craft, cultural heritage and connections between people, land and sea. Focusing on the St Ayles Skiff, a traditional style wooden rowing boat that communities can build themselves with or without previous boat building experience, the skiff has become a way for people to re-establish a connection with the waters around their home, with their own community and with other coastal communities.
Film Length: 18 minutes.
Runs continuously through the day.
On Sunday there will be storytelling throughout the day, the St. Ayles Skiffs will be on display, plus live music in and around the Heritage Centre and village.
