Storyland Sessions

Festival favourite Hamish Napier welcomes you to share music, song poetry and more as part of his acclaimed project, Storylands Sessions.

With support from Creative Scotland, we’re delighted to bring this special performance to Duffus Village Hall on Wednesday 30 September.

Inspired by this year’s festival theme of Connection, Storylands Sessions blends music and storytelling in an intimate, welcoming setting, inviting participants and audiences alike to share in a truly memorable experience.

About Storylands Sessions

Storylands Sessions is a series of music and storytelling events rooted in Badenoch, led by Hamish Napier alongside historian and researcher Aila Schafer.

Celebrating Highland culture and community – both traditional and contemporary – the Sessions bring together people of all ages as both audience and performers. Locals and visitors are encouraged to share classic material alongside original creations.

Inspired by the spirit of 1950s variety concerts and modern open mic nights, the difference with Storylands Sessions is that each event is thoughtfully curated in advance. The result is a relaxed, warm, and welcoming atmosphere for everyone.

How to Take Part

Whether you’re a professional singer, fiddler, poet or storyteller – or simply enthusiastic to give it a go – you’re invited to take part.

This special festival edition explores the theme of Connection. That might mean connection to the Land and sea, Root and branch, Stone and sky, Strangers and neighbours, Paths crossing, Doorways and thresholds, Paws and footsteps. Interpret the theme in your own way and take it wherever your imagination leads.

Each performer has up to five minutes only, including opening chat, or else the shepherd’s crook comes out!

What You Can Share

We welcome contributions from all ages, including:

  • Stories – historical, myth and legend, personal experiences, or a mix
  • Poetry – original work or favourite pieces by other poets
  • Music – traditional or contemporary, instrumental or vocal, solo or group
  • Dance – traditional or modern
  • Visual & Multimedia – art, photography, video and more

Storylands Sessions is supported by Creative Scotland and generous sponsors and its community.
