Making her debut work, The Mariner’s Daughter is inspired by Kershaw’s experience of growing up in a coastal community in the North East of Scotland and her family heritage as daughters and wives of master mariners.

Co-commissioned by Sound Festival and performed by a stellar line-up of classical musicians, the work has voices of women at its heart, based on recent fieldwork recordings from interviews with women from different generations living in the North East of Scotland. The work weaves a rich texture of music, sound and imagery as it sets a course through an exploration of lived experiences. Stories flow from oil rigs to lifeboats, from fish guts to family ties, from fleeting memories of times gone by to firm hopes for times to come, testifying to the power of the North Sea to shape our lives through both inspiration and tragedy. Stories of ordinary women made extraordinary, these stories speak of life, love and loss.
