New York-born and now Moray-based Lucy Dodd creates immersive abstract paintings that evoke vast cosmic, natural and spiritual landscapes. Her work reimagines the traditions of lyrical abstraction and action painting through a deeply experimental and intuitive approach.
At the heart of Dodd’s practice is her use of natural materials. She creates pigments from walnut shells, yew berries, nettles, lichens, tea, kombucha, minerals and soils gathered from around the world. Applied as powders, liquids or raw organic matter, these materials react with the canvas to produce rich, unpredictable colours and textures.
Balancing intention with chance, Dodd allows natural processes to shape her compositions. Swirling forms, mineral patterns and organic marks emerge through layering, smudging, erasing and reworking pigment. The bold, atmospheric and expressive work suggests fossils, corals, constellations and geological formations, creating worlds both ancient and otherworldly.
